It's actually more of a 3.5 in my book, but I'm just SO excited to see this kind of establishment in East Lansing that I decided to round up. I pretty much only had hot pot here, so I am only reviewing that (although I must say their lamb kebobs are GREAT. They taste just like the kind I had in Beijing). PROS: First off, their soup bases are GOOD. I particularly loved the winter melon soup base; it's just so flavorful and delicious. I'm also a big fan of the fish balls they serve. It's served as sort of a paste, which you then scoop up and cook yourself. I've never seen that before, so the novelty was kinda cool, especially since it didn't come at the expense of taste and texture. They slice the meats really thin, which is nice, since I've had hot pot in other places where the meat becomes tough or takes too long to cook because it's sliced so thick. Their noodles are fresh and taste amazing. CONS: Now, I just wish they had more veggies. Something besides romaine lettuce and cabbage. I really wanted something more substantial, like bok choy or Chinese spinach, and I was both stunned and disappointed when they said they didn't have any. On that note, the taro that they served was frozen, and failed to impress. I know that seems like a really nit-picky criticism, but frozen taro tastes much worse than other frozen foods compared to the fresh stuff. Still it IS the Midwest, so perhaps asking for fresh taro is expecting too much. Less importantly, I wish they had more dipping sauces for the hot pot menu. All in all, Rocking Pot had some highs and some lows, but I would DEFINITELY go back and try some of the other items on their menu. I'm so happy that a place like this opened up in E Lansing!

You'll only like broth if youre into authentic chinese spices in the broth (more bland than the vietnamese spices). I recommend their home made fish balls and fried bean curd. Their cow tongue and ribeye steak is the best. And you get free ice cream at the end of your meal! I'll give them a 5 star when they start serving alcohol. You need beer to drink with your hot pot right?

I have mixed feelings about my dining experience at Rocking Pot. In terms of food, the soup was good (got the spicy soup base, it did have quite a bit of oil as another Yelper mentioned, but I though the flavor was really good so I didn't mind). Lots of veggie options to add to your hot pot, all seemingly fresh, and a table of sauces to fully customize flavor. The reason behind my 3 stars is because quite honestly, the Rocking Pot is confusing. The first thing I asked our waitress was how many people one hotpot serves (I've done shabu shabu a number of times, which is the same concept except it's one giant soup for everyone rather than individual bowls... but I've never ordered hotpot in the States so I had no idea what to expect). She said the hotpot is for one person. Well, this is where her and I kind of disagree. Can one person finish a hot pot? Sure, if they are super hungry. Can two people easily share a hot pot? Yes. Easily. Then there's the price. In the top right hand corner, in print barely larger than the menu listings, says "All you can eat $29.95". Since that is the only option, I guess it's implied that all hotpots ordered must fall under the umbrella of all you can eat... but I wasn't that hungry, so I would've loved another smaller option. The only other prices listed are for vegetables and other things that apparently don't fall under this category ($4 for "crab sticks", for example... this was confusing to our group, because we didn't know if it was an add-on to our hot pot or it was an appetizer kind of thing... turned out to be a pile of individually wrapped imitation crab meat). We tried to get some clarification about all of this, but didn't get anywhere. Decided to order and be surprised. As we had guessed, the bills came to $30 per hotpot. That seems unreasonably expensive to me (shabu shabu with two plates of veggies and meat usually only comes out to $20 per person). Also, the table of sauces.. well, that's exactly what it is. No labeling involved or attempt at describing each one, so it's definitely a guess-and-check style of sampling. Overall, the meal was great and very satisfying, but the price was way too steep to warrant a return visit. Oh, and to address one of the other Yelpers: you no longer get ice cream after your meal (which I think you should, for $30!), but they do serve beer. Or at least, I think they do... the table next to us was drinking Tsingtao, but they also appeared to be friends of the owners? Like I said..... confusing.

After waiting an hour all of our food had still not been brought to the table. It was freezing in there and we were told it was because the hot pots warm it up. They didn't. The service was terrible and some of the meat looked old. We did not eat but a few bites of what they had brought to the table and we were still charged 70.00 for 4 people. If you dont know anything about chinese spices and hot pot please don't go but just dont go anyway because the service sucks.

It changed its name to Mr.pot. Unreasonable price. Good place to try hot pot. But it is way to expensive. It is much cheaper to cook at home if you know how. Slow service. Nice environment. But don't go there.

I had high expectations... totally disappointed. Even with no expectations I would have been disappointed. You'll see why: SOUP BASE: The only soup bases worth trying are the fish and seaweed and the winter melon soup. Although neither of those weren't extraordinary, they were the best of the bunch. ANY of the spicy ones were basically a bland soup base with a THICK layer of spicy chili oil on top. Not flavorful at all. Hot pot is supposed to be relatively light, not heavy on the oil. SAUCES: Extra charge per person on sauces? Totally unnecessary. They prided themselves on having a variety of house made sauces but none of them were good. I could taste the cheap soy sauces and sesame oils they used for each one of them. I usually LOVE sesame oil but they used the cheapest kind that had absolutely not fragrance at all. MEATS/SEAFOOD/FISHBALLS: satisfactory, nothing to complain about here. As long as you don't expect a huge variety, you are okay. Meat was definitely sliced thinly like they are supposed to so that's good. The fishballs I could tell they were mostly filled with starch fillers instead of ground fish/shrimp. ATMOSPHERE: They need to install some ventilation systems in PRONTO! I came to eat here last winter (2012) and it was SO steamy and hot in there it was uncomfortable to eat! To add to that, the steam was building up so quickly within the restaurant, the waitresses were slipping and sliding around corners of the restaurants (literally). SERVICE: Satisfactory. I just feel bad they have to deal with the slippery floors. OVERALL: Rocking Pot attempts at being authentic are weak. Far from authentic as can be, but if you just want the experience of hot potting, go right ahead. But I won't ever rethink about visiting ever. I'll stick to making my hot pots at home.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
